Isn't it strange how some modern art is indistinguishable from a pile of dog poo?

This sculpture in La Jolla, CA, cost $200,000 in 1987. Unfortunately, most of the people who look at it think that it resembles a bowel movement. For an astute study of the bowel movement angle, see the Decrepit Old Fool blog. In fact, it is so ugly that a generous philanthropist paid $40,000 to have it moved to a less-visible location.

So tell me, what would you name this piece of art?

What bad art have you been subjected to? Please comment below.

  1. This is a perfect example of "art imitates life".

What is the official title of this sculpture?

  2. The official title is Okeanos, the name of the Greek god of the ocean. According to a New York Times art critic, "The sculpture is a rippling curve that seems to spew out of the earth and curl up like a wave. It suggests not only water, but also clouds and vegetation and human limbs."

  3. I guess I just don't see water, clouds, vegitation or human limbs. This must be like a rorschach ink blot test. Either that or the artist needs to have his/her head examined.
